The Mirror reported that former Premier League goalkeeper Paddy Kenny challenged Manchester United legend Rooney to have a boxing match.

47-year-old Kenny has competed in the Premier League for Sheffield United and Queen's Park Rangers, and has also performed well in the Championship for Leeds United. But the Irish goalkeeper is about to try a different sport after hanging up his boots, and he will play Curtis Davis as part of a charitable boxing campaign.

As part of an event organized by former Arsenal goalkeeper Graham Stark, many former professional players will participate in the October 18 event. But Kenny said he wanted to face Rooney, and for years he had been teased for the game that allowed Manchester City to win the first Premier League championship in team history.

Kenny served as goalkeeper against Manchester City in 2012, and they lost 2-3 in that game. He told Boxing Social: "Roony kept teasing me about that Aguero goal, so I felt that he and I needed to finish it in the ring. 13 years later, and he was still saying that I let those balls in! It might look like I put them in, but I didn't!"

"This charity boxing match was to raise funds for four great charities. I've been training for eight weeks and boxing for four or five weeks, and during this period I lost more than 12.7 kg, which is a big deal."

"This is one of the reasons I want to participate in, and get back to shape myself. The event in London will be very exciting and I'm really looking forward to it."

Whether Rooney will consider a fight with Kenny remains to be seen, he confirmed earlier this year that Misfits Boxing had contacted him and invited him into the ring.

Rooney told The Overlap at the time: "They contacted me and asked this question, but I think at the moment I want to focus on returning to management, not boxing."
