If a pregnant female dog is unable to deliver the fetus beyond the normal delivery time during delivery, it is called difficult labor.
The incidence of dying childbirth in female dogs is closely related to the breed. Generally speaking, short-headed breed dogs are more likely to occur; family dogs are more likely to occur than wild dogs (mainly due to insufficient exercise); dying childbirth in the menstrual dogs (virgin dogs) is more likely to occur than transgenic dogs (non-virgin dogs);
1. Causes of dying childbirth in female dogs:
1. Productivity dying childbirth. Because the female dog is weak, the array shrinks and force is weak, the array shrinks and breaks water too early, causing the uterus itself to be diseased.
2. Delayed birth canal. Uterine torsion, cervical stenosis, cervical malformation, vagina and vaginal stenosis, resulting in birth canal tumors, pelvic stenosis and deformation.
3. Fetal dysfunction. In the uterus, there are too many fetuses, and the twins are difficult to give birth (twins squeeze into the birth canal at the same time and fetal malformation), and other factors such as irregular fetal position, improper fetal posture or direction.
2. Symptoms of dysfunction of female dogs:
The symptoms of dysfunction of dysfunction are obvious. Difficulty should be suspected in any of the following conditions:
1. Past medical history of dysfunction or reproductive tract obstruction; rectal cooling (dropped to 37℃) lasts for 24 hours without delivery;
2. Strong contraction of the abdominal wall lasts for 30-60 minutes, and newborn fetus does not produce;
3. Active delivery for 1-2 hours without a baby;
4. During active delivery, the rest period exceeds 4 to 6 hours;
5. The animal is suffering from obvious pain (moans, licking and gnawing on the vagina); dark, pus-like or blood-like secretions are discharged;
6. The pregnancy period is prolonged (moans more than 70 days).
3. Treatment of difficult labor for female dogs:
1. Since the fetal position of female dogs is difficult to correct intrauterine, midwifery measures should be implemented quickly after clarifying the cause. For female dogs with difficult labor, drug induced delivery combined with forceps to traction and help for the childbirth. For difficult labor caused by other factors, caesarean section should be treated immediately.
2. When checking for no abnormalities in the soft birth canal (the cervix opening is sufficient), it is believed that productivity is difficult to give birth. One unit of oxytocin/kg weight can be injected intramuscularly, and once every 20 minutes, usually 2-3 injections. In order to improve the contraction force of the uterus, 10% calcium gluconate can be intravenously injected 10% to 30 ml.
3. Difficulty caused by abnormal birth canal and fetal fetal disease. Caesarean section should be sent to the hospital in a timely manner.
4. Care for difficult labor of female dogs:
1. Dogs with difficult labor should have sufficient rest after childbirth, but they can exercise appropriately after physical strength recovery to promote uterine contraction and lochia discharge. If the weather is severe, be careful to prevent wind and keep warm.
2. Postpartum dogs should pay attention to nutritional intake. In addition to supplementing and repairing the consumption and trauma of childbirth, they also need to provide essential nutritional sources for breastfeeding to ensure milk secretion and health. Food should be rich in nutrients and contains enough calories and moisture, and more protein and soup foods should be added. And appropriate supplements for vitamins and iron.
5. How to prevent difficult delivery of female dogs?
The following measures can be taken for prevention of difficult labor:
1. Female dogs provide reasonable nutrition during pregnancy. Too good nutrition can cause the fetus to be too big and cause difficult labor. For dogs with strong appetite, you can control your food relative to each other, especially after 45 days of pregnancy, you should pay attention to adjusting the nutrition of your female dog.
2. Pregnant female dogs should have appropriate exercise, which can enhance the female dog's physical fitness and increase the female dog's productivity when giving birth. Reduce the fear of female dogs when giving birth. The female dog should enter the delivery room in advance before giving birth to make it familiar with the production environment and ensure the quietness of the production area.
